Mr.Shahid Javed Burki talks on "Geopolitics, Demographics, and Pakistan's Policy Future" at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS)

On 4 December 2025, the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) hosted a lecture by Mr. Shahid Javed Burki (Chairman BIPP) titled "Geopolitics, Demographics, and Pakistan's Policy Future " at the VC Lounge, Academic Block. In his talk, Mr. Burki highlighted how rapid global change should inform Pakistan's public policy choices. He mentioned that the United States, under President Donald Trump's second term is retreating from broad international engagement, moving closer to Russia, distancing itself from Europe, and seeking to contain China's rise. Meanwhile, global demographic trends are diverging: countries in the Global North are grappling with declining fertility and aging populations, while countries like Pakistan continue to experience high population growth and a predominantly young population. Mr. Burki emphasized that these geopolitical and demographic shifts must be integrated into Pakistan's policy planning. He highlighted the importance of harnessing Pakistan's young population both for national development and to meet the growing talent demands of China and aging Western economies.
